"The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul." -Dieter F. Uchtdorf. Since I was very young I have always been a crafty and artsy person. Although it wasn't until I began pottery classes in high school that I realized what I was capable of creating. I create artwork because it is a relaxing process that is very rewarding, I make these pieces with a variety of hand building and wheel throwing techniques, and I feel that my art is an expression of my thoughts and the way that I feel.
As an elementary school student, I can remember wishing and anticipating the day that we would have art class. These were always my favorite days, especially when we would work with the clay. My exposure to art as a child continued at home, as my family was very interested in arts and crafts. As an only child, it was natural that the extra bedroom in my house was turned into my very own art room. I remember creating countless pieces of art in that room and being so excited to show them to my family. Now in high school I find creating art pieces to be a relaxing and fun experience. Seeing the finished pieces that you have worked so hard on come together the way you pictured it, is also very rewarding. In my pottery 3 class, I work with earthenware clay to create my art pieces. In some of my pieces I also have used melted glass. The pieces that I create vary sculptural to very functional. I use a variety of tools to create the clay pieces some of which are |
brushes, needle tools, banding wheels and slip. To make the clay pieces I use a variety of hand building techniques , which include using slabs, coils and pinching. I also have made some of my pieces on the pottery wheel. Although, my favorite technique to use is coil. When using coils I feel as though I have more control over the clay and more freedom in what I can create.
I feel that art is a way for me to really be myself and express how I am feeling, Through my art, I want people to be able to see how much time and love that I put into my piece. In my piece "Cherries", I created a realistic looking bowl of clay cherries. This piece was inspired by a painting of cherries by Janet Fish, but I also but my own touch on it and made it my own. Nothing is more rewarding to me that showing a photo of this piece to someone and them believing that it is truly a bowl of cherries. It just confirms that all of my hard work payed off and has not been overseen. I recently received a Gold award for my piece "Cherries" from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and awards of excellence for both of my pieces "Cherries" and "Reef" and an award of merit for my piece "Oasis" at the DCPS High School Art Exhibition. These awards also meant that my piece were displayed in my community. I am extremely excited to receive these awards because they are the perfect end to my high school art career. In conclusion, art has been an amazing part of my life and I have only become more interested in it as time has gone on. It is so fun using and trying different techniques and it is always very rewarding seeing the final pieces. I hope that you enjoy the rest of my website and learning more about artwork! |
