What did I make? For this project I was assigned to create a piece inspired by the ocean. I chose to create a sculptural series of projects inspired by a coral reef.
Why did I make it?When researching for this project I was very inspired by the detail and vibrant colors in coral reefs. This is why I chose to try to create my own coral reef out of clay.

How did I make it?I began by rolling out a slab and using the hump mold method to create the bases. I then used slab, coil, piercing, press mold and incising techniques to create details directly on the base and to create appliques. I then scored and slipped the appliques onto the base. I allowed the base to become leather hard before I removed it from the hump mold. The pieces we then bisque fired. To glaze my projects, I used a variety of colored underglazes to create more depth and clear glaze. I used a sponge to apply some of the underglaze to give it a more organic look. The pieces were then glaze fired.
