What did I make? This project is a functional, wheel thrown bowl.
Why did I make this?I made this project with the purpose of improving and practicing wheel throwing. I am very new to wheel throwing and have had a lot of fun, and frustration, trying to improve the techniques. In this process I have created multiple bowls for this assigned project. For all of them I tried to stick to a professional and organic theme. I did this by keeping the forms simple and using crystal glazes.
How did I make this?To begin I wedged my clay to remove air bubbles. I then paced a bat on the wheel and moistened the middle of it. Next, I slammed the clay onto the middle of the bat and went through the process of centering it. Once centered, I made the initial hole I my clay and than stopped the wheel to check the width of the bottom. I then, use the "butterfly hands" technique to open up the hole and begin to create walls. I continued to pull up the walls to create my desired form. I then used a series of tools to taper and shape my bowl. Next, I used a chamois to smooth the lip of my bowl and then cut my bowl off the wheel with a wire tool.I then let the bowl become leather hard and scrubbed to with a brilo pad to make it smooth. It was and bisque fired and after painted with crystal glaze. Lastly the project was glaze fired.
