What did I make? For my slab bowl project I created a mainly sculptural slab bowl.
Why did I make it?iI made this project for the empty bowls charity. What led me to create the bowl that I made was my ever growing love for creating pieces inspired by nature. This way that the cool colors of the glass meet the warmth of the glaze, resembles an oasis in the desert. This is why I have titled this piece "Oasis". The form of my bowl was also highly influenced by my use of the melted glass which I wanted to be the highlight of my piece.

How did I make it? To begin this project I rolled out a slab and than cut to edges to make them a wavy, organic shape. I then draped the slab over the slump mold and formed the lip to give it rhythm and movement.Next, I score and slipped coils to the bottom of the bowl, which would eventual become pools for the glass to melt in. After that, I let my project become leather hard and removed it from the mold. I than scrubbed it with a brilo pad to make sure it was smooth. My project was than bisque fired.
Once bisque fired, I painted my project with a crystal glaze. I then placed green and blue marbles in the pools in the bottom of the bowl, ones glaze fired these marbles melted to create the melted glass effect. We were also assigned to write a poem to accompany our piece, which can be seen below. |
